More About Pure Gas Flow Measurement

Pure and mixed gases are used in manufacturing processes for pharmaceuticals, vehicles, electronics, and many more applications. These gases must maintain high purity or else they risk diminishing product quality.

Large shops or manufacturers often store gases on-site and then pipe the gas to equipment. Measuring the flow of gases to track usage and compare to purchase manifests allows operators to find inefficiencies or leaks.

Detecting leaks early is crucial to maintain stock and keep costs under control. Finding inefficiencies early can allow the operator to make key decisions for maintenance or replacement strategies.

Fox Thermal mass flow meters provide the ideal solution to control leaks with easy installation, a no-moving-parts design, and a wide turndown (up to 1,000:1, 100:1 typical).

Thermal Mass Meters for Pure Gas Flow Meter Applications

Pure gases are used in a multitude of ways across different industries, requiring accurate flow measurements. Pure gas flow monitoring is essential for specialty gas producers of nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, oxygen, etc.

Other applications for pure gas flow meters include food processing and beverage manufacturing, fluid bed dryers, water purification, tablet and pill coating, welding, annealing, and purge monitoring.

Fox Thermal manufactures the following thermal mass flow meters for pure gas flow measurement:

  • Air flow meters
  • Ammonia flow meters
  • Argon flow meters
  • Butane flow meters
  • Carbon dioxide flow meters
  • Ethane flow meters
  • Helium flow meters
  • Hydrogen flow meters
  • Methane flow meters
  • Nitrogen flow meters
  • Oxygen flow meters
  • Propane flow meters
Pure gas flow monitoring is critical in the beverage manufacturing industry.

Avoid Downtime with Gas-SelectX® and CAL-V™ Calibration Validation for Pure Gas Flow Meter Applications

When measuring pure gas flow, the flow meter must be calibrated to the actual gas composition. Fox Thermal’s Gas-SelectX® gas selection feature - available on our FT1, FT4A, and FT4X flow meters - allows the user to easily switch from monitoring the flow of one gas to another.

So, for example, Gas-SelectX® comes with a Pure Gas menu, allowing the user to change from measuring pure Nitrogen to pure Oxygen. This avoids sending the meter back to the factory for recalibration to the new pure gas type - eliminating the time out of service, process downtime, and service charges from manufacturers.

Another key feature from Fox Thermal, the CAL-V™ Calibration Validation test feature, is available on the FT1, FT3, FT4A, and FT4X flow meter models. A CAL-V™ test can be run anytime and under process flow conditions.

The test produces a pass/fail result that ensures the flow meter retains its NIST-traceable calibration from the factory. This allows the user to avoid shutting down the process while checking that the meter is still measuring the gas flow accurately.

Pure gas flow meters may be used in any of these applications and industries:

  • Food Processing like CO2 in beer manufacturing, nitrogen in mayonnaise manufacturing, hydrogen in hydrogenated oil production
  • Pharmaceutical Industry for tablet and pill coating nitrogen flow
  • Hydrogen flow for fuel cell production
  • Oxygen flow to burners for the glass or ceramics manufacturing industry
  • Nitrogen purge monitoring in pulp and paper plants
  • Leak testing in industrial processing plants
  • Argon usage for specialty gas producers
  • Coke or oven gas in steel and aluminum fabrication

See how Fox Thermal helps make downtime a thing of the past.
