Gas-SelectX® and CAL-V™ for Superior Gas Flow Meter Operations

In the modern energy industry, hydrogen production is ramping up to supply power plants with the fuel they need to meet emission reduction goals. Over time, the gas composition is expected to change from being primarily fossil fuels to more hydrogen in the blend. For most flow meter technologies, a gas composition change in the pipe will require that the meter be returned to the manufacturer for recalibration to the new hydrogen-natural gas blend.

The Gas-SelectX® feature, available on Fox Thermal flow meter models FT1, FT4A, and FT4X, allows technicians to program the meter’s gas composition settings while keeping the meter functioning in place and avoiding shutdowns. This reduction in maintenance and shutdown costs improves the overall performance of the site or process.

Another Fox Thermal feature, CAL-V™ calibration validation, allows quick verification of the original NIST-traceable calibration from the factory. A CAL-V™ test can be run anytime and under process flow conditions and is available on the FT1, FT3, FT4A, and FT4X flow meter models.

For future energy production systems, Gas SelectX® ensures that operators transitioning from natural gas to hydrogen gas will be able to change the gas mix in the flow meter settings to account for the gradual increase in hydrogen over time without having to send it back to the factory for recalibration to the new hydrogen/gas blend. Subsequently, the CAL-V calibration validation feature then allows them to ensure that the meter is still measuring accurately after they change to the new gas blend.
